End of Year Concert: A Different Kind of Finale

El Sistema Oma youth orchestra Video playig Canon in D

Every year (since we began doing this overseas) we usually look forward to a grand finale, a full orchestra coming together to celebrate the progress of our students. But this time, unforeseen circumstances meant we couldn’t gather everyone on one stage. Instead, each school held its own concert, smaller in scale but full of pride and joy.

The children played beautifully, and the parents, teachers, and friends, felt the same excitement as if it were one big event. In many ways, these individual concerts gave each school its own spotlight, showing how far their students had come.

Still, we wanted to capture the spirit of unity. So we recorded every child and compiled the performances into one video, all of them playing Canon in D. Watching the final edit was moving: dozens of young musicians, each in their own space, yet together in harmony.

It wasn’t the finale we had planned, but it became something even more meaningful. It showed that music can connect us across distance, and that resilience and creativity are just as important as rehearsal and performance.
